Youth Confirmation

TIMELINE OF CONFIRMATIONS FOR YOUTH

For detailed information and requirements please go “Next Step” section and click link under the "Children & Youth" tab, then "Sacramental Preparation".

What are the Ages to Confirm my child?

The sacrament of confirmation is to be conferred on the faithful at about the age of discretion, unless the Episcopal Conference has decided on a different age, or there is a danger of death or, in the judgement of the minister, a grave reason suggests otherwise. The Age of Discretion is 7 years of age. (From Canon Law, 891).

Note the following Complementary Norm which has been promulgated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: "The National Conference of Catholic Bishops, in accord with the prescriptions of canon 891, hereby decrees that the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Latin Rite shall be conferred between the age of discretion and about sixteen years of age, within the limits determined by the diocesan bishop and with regard for the legitimate exceptions given in Canon 891."

As such, as your child progresses through their spiritual growth with the Catholic church, they should ideally be confirmed between the ages of 7 and 16 - as you have made the commitment to Baptism, then it stands to reason that their faith should be nurtured accordingly and thus they should be confirmed when the child reaches the Age of Discretion.

Confirmation for Youth starts HERE.

Please note that while the usual timeline to receive Confirmation should take place between 7 and 16 years of age, some people come to the Catholic faith later in life or go through the Rites at a later time due to life circumstances. For adults age 18 and older and out of high school, please visit the Adult Education pages, under "Adult Confirmation," or "Becoming Catholic," then contact the Director of Adult Education.

Adult Confirmation

ADULT CONFIRMATION PREPARATION

Stop: If you are not Catholic, this preparation is not for you. Adult Confirmation Preparation is for baptized Catholics that have already received First Holy Communion. To learn about becoming Catholic, please go to Baptism for Adult and to "R.C.I.A. Process/Becoming Catholic.”
